It actually just made me chuckle a few times. From frame one, they're Dionysian whirls of booze, lust and hero worship, minus the sense that that things are ebbing and flowing as they would at a real party. His was the worst portrayed of them all. It had taken me two or three weeks to complete. Daisy says she loves Gatsby but cannot bring herself to say she never loved Tom. In my opinion they butchered the character of Nick Caraway. In 2010, it was reported that the film was being set up by but by 2011, was close to acquiring a deal to finance and take worldwide distribution of The Great Gatsby. I know he's supposed to be a man who deals with things outside the law, and has his fair share of shady schemes, but this movie really makes him out to be this despicable, horrible person and I really don't think Fitzgerald wanted him to be seen like that. The long-destroyed , thought by scholars to have partially inspired Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby estate, was used as a main inspiration for Gatsby's home in the film.

Nick then narrates that Gatsby was born to a poor farming family, but later encountered a wealthy man named Dan Cody, whom he rescued from a storm. Tom stops for gas at George's garage, where George tells him that he and Myrtle are moving and that he suspects Myrtle is unfaithful. Seven years previously, in the summer of 1922, Nick moves from the to New York after abandoning writing. All this busywork might astonish if Lurhmann's heart were in it—but is it? And yet DiCaprio makes him comprehensible and achingly real. The movie's like a guest at a wild gathering who finds the frenzy tiresome and would rather be at home reading, but can't let on because he's supposed to be the life of the party. This is a huge, gorgeous, Technicolor comic book rendering of the story that puts all writers to shame since we know we can never top it! Much like his modern twists applied in and , Baz uses the movie's music not as a background, but instead prominently in the foreground, which takes on a character of its own.

I'm not sure who would have been better for Gatsby, maybe Daniel Craig or someone who could have been good at being an American trying to pretend to be an Oxford man. Tom invites Nick to go to the Yale Club with him, but they end up picking up Tom's mistress, , in a dingy neighborhood called the Valley of Ashes, and then going to an apartment that Tom keeps for Myrtle in Manhattan. It is awkward at first, but they manage to get more and more comfortable with each other, and eventually become romantically entangled once again. The opening scene was filmed from Rivendell Child, Adolescent and Family Unit in Concord, Sydney, only a few kilometres from Sydney 2000 Olympic Stadium. Gatsby and Daisy drive home in Gatsby's yellow car.

The interior sets for the Buchanan mansion were inspired by the style of. They go to a speakeasy bar, where alcohol is served, and Gatsby introduces Nick to his business associate, , who appears to be involved with some shady business deals. He visits his cousin, , who is married to the brutish and very wealthy former athlete,. She then tells him that Gatsby wants Nick to invite him and Daisy over for tea, so that they can be reunited. Daisy realizes that her allegiance is to Tom, and Tom contemptuously sends her back to East Egg with Gatsby, attempting to prove that Gatsby cannot hurt him. Once that happens, the Luhrmannerisms distract from the film's true heart: the actions and feelings of its characters. Tom, Nick, and Jordan come upon the scene.
